Overview

Under the Open University concept, you may enroll in many of the regular on-campus courses at Cal Poly Pomona without seeking official admission, providing you have the consent of the instructor and you have met all prerequisite requirements.

Open University courses are offered in 10-week quarters beginning in January (Winter), March (Spring), and September (Fall) each year and a more convenient and flexible "Summer Session" in June offering classes in two 5-week sessions and a traditional 10-week session. All approved enrollments are accepted on a space-available basis and enrollment will be considered conditional until all regular students have had an opportunity to enroll.

OPEN UNIVERSITY POLICIES

All Open University students will be held to the College of the Extended University (CEU) refund policy and other policies listed below:

Prerequisite Requirements:
Students must submit a Prerequisite Verification Form to their instructor along with their Open University Petition. If a course requires a prerequisite, the student must obtain the Department Chair’s signature on the Prerequisite Verification Form. Both forms must be submitted to the College of the Extended University when registering and paying fees.

International Student Eligibility:
In order to fulfill immigration requirements, all students must provide clearance documentation from their international student advisor before enrollment. The clearance document must be obtained from the Cal Poly Pomona International Center located in building 1, room 104.

Methods of Payment:
Fees for Open University courses may be paid by check (made payable to Cal Poly Pomona), money order, or credit card. Cash payments are not accepted. Dishonored checks will be assessed a $30 service charge (fee is subject to change without notice) and all student records will be withheld pending payment of obligation.

Late Registration Period:
Late registrations will be accepted 5 business days after the deadline date stamped on the front side of the petition. Late registrations will be assessed a $25 late fee (fee is subject to change without notice).

Refund Policy:
Full refund of Open University fees is made only when a class is cancelled. Partial refund (65%) of Open University fees may be requested through the 13th business day of the quarter, after which no refund will be made. To receive a refund students must officially drop their course(s) with the instructor’s signed consent on a Petition to Drop form. Forms are obtained from and returned to the College of the Extended University prior to 5 p.m. Allow two to three weeks for refund processing.

Withdrawal Policy:
Students unable to attend Open University courses after registering must obtain a Petition to Drop form from the College of the Extended University, obtain the instructor’s signature on the petition, and return the petition to the College of the Extended University. Failing to officially withdraw from a class generally results in a grade of WU which is equivalent to an F for purposes of grade point average. STOP PAYMENT OF A CHECK is not considered an acceptable method of withdrawal and will result in increased financial obligation to the university.

Open University Grades:
Students in Open University courses receive letter grades (A-F) upon completion of coursework unless the course is audited. Students who wish to audit a course may indicate Audit on the Open University petition and pay the regular registration fee. A student may not change grading status (audit-credit) after the fourth class session.
