Have you dreamed of completing your college degree but just don’t know how to get started? Perhaps you’ve applied to the university for admission and want to get a head start on your classes while you wait for formal notification of acceptance. Or, you may just want to sample a new subject area or update your current degree. Whatever your reason, Open University offers you the opportunity to take regular academic courses offered at Cal Poly Pomona without formal admission.
Under the Open University concept, you may enroll in many of the regular on-campus courses at Cal Poly Pomona without seeking official admission, providing you have the consent of the instructor and you have met all prerequisite requirements.
Open University courses are offered in 10-week quarters beginning in January (Winter), March (Spring), and September (Fall) each year and a more convenient and flexible "Summer Session" in June offering classes in two 5-week sessions and a traditional 10-week session. All approved enrollments are accepted on a space-available basis and enrollment will be considered conditional until all regular students have had an opportunity to enroll.

Prerequisites for Open University courses may be found in the University catalog. Students enrolling in the following subjects without meeting the specified requirements may be subject to disenrollment at any time during the course.
English-Open University students will not be allowed to enroll in any English course unless they have taken the English Placement Test. See the University catalog for exemptions to this test requirement.
Mathematics-Open University students will not be allowed to enroll in any Mathematics course unless they have demonstrated basic competence in mathematics by: 1) passing the Entry Level Mathematics Examination (ELM), or 2) passing with a grade of “C” or better in designated math courses. See the Test Center (CLA, Building 98) for information on exemptions to this requirement. In addition, students must pass a Diagnostic Test in Mathematics before enrolling. See the Mathematics Department for further information or call the Hotline at 909.869.3468.
Education-Enrollment in credential courses (TED 422 - TED 591) is limited to students admitted to the University and the credential program (BCAP). For further information or to discuss special circumstances, please contact the Student Services Center at 909.869.4400 or visit Building 5, Room 228.
Business-Enrollment in any Business course less than 500 level requires prior approval from the College of Business Student Sucess Center located in Building 164, Room 1060.
Engineering-Enrollment in any Engineering courses offered by the College of Engineering requires prior approval from the Dean’s office Building 9, Room 225A within the College of Engineering.
Graduate Courses-Enrollment in 500-level courses requires the signature of the Graduate Coordinator of the individual department, as well as that of the course instructor. Enrollments in the Open University are accepted for 600-level courses only with signature approval from the following: Associate Vice President for Academic Programs, Graduate Coordinator for the individual department, and instructor.
Fees for Open University courses may be paid by check (make checks payable to Cal Poly Pomona), money order, or credit card. Students writing dishonored checks will be assessed a $30 service charge and all student records will be withheld pending payment of obligation.
Students in Open University courses receive letter grades (A-F) upon completion of course work, unless the course is audited. Students who wish to audit a course may indicate "Audit" on the registration form and pay the regular registration fee. A student may not change enrollment status (audit-credit) after the fourth class session.
Students unable to attend Open University courses after registering must obtain a Petition to Drop from the College of the Extended University, obtain the instructor's signature on the petition, and return the petition to the College of the Extended University. Failing to officially withdraw from a class generally results in a grade of "U" which is equivalent to an "F" for purposes of grade point average. STOP PAYMENT OF A CHECK is not considered an acceptable method of withdrawal and will result in increased financial obligation to the University.
Full refund of Open University fees is made only when a class is canceled or a student's enrollment is canceled. Partial refund (65%) of Open University fees may be requested through the established deadline (see Open University Calendar), after which no refunds will be made. To receive a refund students must officially drop their course(s) with the instructor's signed consent on a Petition to Drop form. This form must be obtained from and returned to the College of the Extended University prior to 5:00 p.m. on the deadline date. All refunds, including credit card payments, are made by check from the State of California. Allow two to three weeks for refund processing.
