The College of the Extended University

As one of the university’s major outreach tools specifically created to link California State Polytechnic University, Pomona (Cal Poly Pomona) to the numerous and diverse constituents and communities in Southern California, the College of the Extended University (CEU) provides stimulating and dynamic continuing education programs to our customers in new and innovative ways.

We currently offer over 1,500 courses ranging from credit courses and degree programs to business and management, trade and technical certificates and personal enrichment classes.

Our programs are designed to meet the needs of working professionals (non-traditional students) wanting to enhance their career opportunities along with those traditional students needing additional programs not offered through the university.

Courses for Business and Industry

Certificate programs are a key educational offering at CEU. Thousands of people have benefited from completing a CEU certificate program, and these programs continue to be one of the core competencies of the college. Expanding to meet the needs of the workforce, we offer many types of non-credit certificates, stand-alone courses and workshops including those focusing on such subjects as human resource management, event planning, geographic information systems, plastics engineering, construction management, food safety, and pharmacy technician. We also offer a variety of test preparation workshops including GRE, GMAT, SAT 1, CBEST, CSET, and Engineer-in-Training (EIT) F.E. Review.

Online Learning

In order to meet the growing need for distance learning, CEU has partnered with Gatlin Education Services—the leader in online certification programs to offer a wide variety of online programs. These rigorous online courses provide more flexibility than a traditional classroom setting can, while still delivering the quality education you have come to expect from our programs. For many, online courses are the perfect way to start a new career, enhance marketability, or simply learn a new skill . . .all from the comfort of your home or office!

Corporate Consulting & Training

Through a combination of consulting, training and tools, CEU works to align the corporate learning strategies of our clients to their business strategies. Corporate learning solutions are offered in the following key areas: Geographic Information Systems (GIS); Leadership and Organizational Development and Training, and Food Safety Training.

In addition, many of our on-campus certificates and courses are also available for customization and delivery on-site at corporations and businesses–helping employers stay abreast of advancing technologies, trends and skills essential in today’s workplace. Courses may be selected from our list of key program areas or may be chosen from our course catalog where the content and timeframes can be combined, expanded, or streamlined to meet the specific needs of the company.

External Degree Programs

In addition to on-campus certificate programs, we offer two external degree programs designed specifically for working professionals. These credit programs offer many advantages including flexible scheduling and off-campus locations.

  • Bachelor of Architecture Special Session Program: For the past 20 years, CEU and the Department of Architecture have offered working professionals the opportunity to complete their architectural studies toward the first professional degree in architecture through the Bachelor of Architecture Special Session Program. The Special Session coursework mirrors that of the traditional daytime program, with courses offered at times that are more convenient for working adults.
  • Professional MBA (PMBA): This joint program between the College of Business Administration and CEU holds the distinction of being the only off-campus graduate program offered by Cal Poly Pomona. Established in 1992, the PMBA program is designed for working professionals who may not have time to attend the traditional, full-time, on-campus MBA program. The program is the same as the on-campus MBA program–same faculty, same curriculum, same accreditation, and the same graduation ceremony. The difference is the method of delivery.

Open University

One of the most recognized and important offerings to the local and campus community is the Open University program. Designed so that individuals may enroll in many of the traditional on-campus courses without official university admission, Open University is a popular choice for those who want to develop new career skills, sample a new subject, or take classes while waiting for formal admission to the university. Open University enrollment is offered on a space available basis for all classes.

International Programs

In an effort to expand learning experiences and opportunities both locally and abroad, CEU offers a variety of programs that go beyond the walls of a traditional classroom and offer skills that benefit those working in today’s global marketplace.

  • Cal Poly English Language Institute: The primary focus of the Cal Poly English Language Institute (CPELI) is to prepare international students for academic study at an American college or university. By participating in a variety of activities in addition to classroom sessions, students not only gain the language skills they need to succeed, but they also learn to adapt socially and academically. This acculturation is what sets CPELI apart from many other English language programs.
  • International Executive Training & Education Programs: CEU has been providing training and managing international assistance and development programs for over a decade. We have worked in or with groups from many countries including China, Bulgaria, Swaziland, Cyprus, Turkey, South Korea and Vietnam. Our programs have spanned topics from agriculture to venture capital.

Center for Training, Technology & Incubation

The Center for Training, Technology & Incubation (CTTI) is currently the headquarters of the College of the Extended University and home to a number of select early stage technology companies.

Initiated by a partnership with NASA and the U.S Economic Development Administration (EDA), CTTI houses the entrepreneurial element of Innovation Village, the 65-acre research park located on the Cal Poly Pomona campus. CTTI offers lease space in flexible sizes inclusive of office, R&D, wet labs and light industrial.
